As any significant honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category that year
- Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
- A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences in the world and have been for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
